Woodworking Technique: Gluing Veneer on Compound Curve
I completely forgot I made this table. Mine was in red oak because it was what I could afford at the time.
Mister, before to teach somebody else, educate yourself! You are missing so much. You work as a wood turner from the beginning of previous century.
I was surprised you didn’t use your tapering jig. But I guess they only work when you cut a taper along the entire length of the board. A double taper would be more difficult for a tapering jig.
Always trying to show a different way of doing things, so just cut the taper on the bandsaw freehand, and then cleaned it up with the hand plane.
Reminds me of the day I discovered Richard Raffan’s UA-cam channel. A true master. You’re on the same pedestal. Hope you can keep posting new content for us in the future generation. Nothing beats watching a master of the craft at work!

@@woodwhisperer hey Marc old pal, thanks very much for your kind words of encouragement!!
How frequently do you stop to blow out the shavings? And how long was the rough hollowing process?
I keep my air hose next to my lathe and blow out the shavings frequently so that they don't get in the way of the cutters.
David, When you lube up the outside end grain of the black acacia vessel, do you need to worry about the interior surfaces too or not? Seems there is moisture loss inside also that would affect shrinkage when drying.
@@rickwhite3112 Hey Rick, as you saw,I only waxed the end grain top and bottom and I don't worry about the rest of it. It's been over 4 1/2 months and now it's dry with no cracks or splits. I have been weighing it every week and it stopped losing weight 2 months ago but I like to be certain so that is why I have waited this long.
thanks for all you do! you have been inspiring me for decades.

Do you want to see more project videos like this? Let me know!
Absolutely!
Definitely!
Yes Sir!
Yes, please! Thank you very much.
I have to say, "yes please". There is so much woodturning content on UA-cam, to see a 'Grand Master Turner' showing his craft, style and knowledge is an extremely treasured experience for people like myself. You encapsulate safety, knowledge and experience together for those wishing to learn who may not have the finances to pay for on line demonstrations or DVD's that may still be available to learn from. Thank you so much for your time, patience and thoughtfulness in putting together these UA-cam videos of yours, they are appreciated. Your hollow forms are truly an inspiration for me to start working on when I recuperate from my shattered ankle and finally after eighteen months get back in my workshop. I am particular interested in your patination techniques and would like to know if you have any DVD's available on the tuition of this style of art. Thanks again sir.
Stunning piece. I’d love to make something inspired by this design.
Man...I used to love watching your show! This is the first I've seen one of your shows in years. Brings back sooo many memories. I loved how at the end of your episodes you'd display the final project in a pile of saw dust under warm lighting. That was the best! At least that's how I remember it. 🤔
Is there a way to prevent the purple heart from losing its color over time?
This show was my fuel and guide into woodworking. I still proudly display my butcher block table I built inspired from Mr Marks. And in a few short weeks I will finally begin my bench with copper patina legs.
Thanks man, that's great to hear!
I fondly remember this episode many years ago. It helped start my adventure in woodworking and was sort of a lightbulb moment about veneering with exotic wood versus whole board. Thanks as always!
Hey @nurmworks-4284 thanks for your comments, and keep on working with bandsawn veneers. Thick veneers open a whole other world of woodworking possibilities.
I vividly remember this episode and how all of the different math made my head hurt. now all these years later, watching it again, and the math is still a bit overwhelming for me
Patrick, I feel your pain, hahaha.Math always gives me time to pause. I wouldn't worry so much about the math, focus more on a full scale sketch or drawing.Once you can visulize the final piece, just look for faster ways to get there. I had to give numbers to make the Producers happy but in my shop,I mostly work off of images that I visulized in my head.
Such a simple yet striking piece! I've gotta ask... The jointer used was a small one. Was this filmed before you bought your large Oliver?
Thanks Greg. Yes my 16 inch jointer (Yates American but just says American on the label) was in my shop back then. I bought it used in 1984 and restored it. On the show which we began shooting in 2001, I wanted to make sure that the small home, garage shops felt like they were going to be able to build some of these projects so I tried to use my other machines that were more affordable to home hobbyist's or small business's. My 6 inch jointer works fine for smaller boards. Sharp knives are the key.
@@DavidJMarks Cool. I remember at one point in the series you showed off "the nickel test" on the Yates... I couldn't remember if it was because you just acquired it or if it was always there and it was just the right time to talk about it. Thanks again for sharing this series.
Another beautiful piece!
Thanks very kindly Tim!
These are the videos that started my woodworking hobby many, many years ago. Thank you David!
@ppezaris Thanks very much! I'm very glad to hear that my videos helped you to get started in woodworking which is an activity that I hold a high value for!
This is one of your best projects. You published this SEVERAL years ago in a woodworking magazine. I don't remember which. I made mine then out of construction lumber. It has held up and performed exemplary and taken more abuse than I can tell. It's truly is a tribute to your expertise of design and function. A great project to share. Thank you
look at those prices!! LOL
@@cbriangilbert1978 Hey Brian, wood doesn’t just grow on Trees ya know! Hahahaha 🤣
Its nice, but idk where i would put it.
👌💕
I really like that display stand and the beautiful hollow forms.
Getting to see all these episodes again brings back the memories of leaning to make furniture. Met you at a Woodworking Show in Syracuse in 2004 with my buddy Scott. We watched your presentation and then realized the crew that was supposed to tear down your setup did not show up. We stuck around to help you pack up and have some great conversation.
Very beautiful. And I liked how you made the dadoes. Learning how to make jigs seems to be half the battle.
I used to love this show! No idea you had a UA-cam channel
@@danieldean8953 Thanks Daniel! Please like and subscribe to help it grow so that I can afford to pay my editors and make new content. Meanwhile I will continue to upload an episode of Woodworks each week.Cheers!
You talk about hand crafted quality, but can't be bothered to hand cut the dovetails.
@@patrickhotra9241 , I have cut dovetails by hand and by router templates. If you work as a furniture maker for a living as I do, I give my clients an option to pay more for hand cut dovetails but they don’t want to pay for it. You do You my friend!
@@hualon hahaha, thanks very much for your comment. I don’t why some people feel the need to attack others who are simply showing different methods of accomplishing their work. For what it’s worth, I recommend Rob Cosman’s UA-cam channel for woodworkers who want to cut dovetails by hand. Rob is one of the best out there when it comes to cutting dovetails by hand. He was able to study with Alan Peter’s, whose work I have deep admiration for! One more thing, hosting a TV show on furniture making is high pressure work. The producers always complain that my projects were too complicated and they constantly told me to dumb it down. On top of that I had to crank out 30 episodes a year which was barely enough time for anything else, especially when raising 2 kids.
Great video
@@floridabeardedwoodworker Thanks very much my friend!
Beautiful. I particularly like the addition of the purpleheart splines.
Awesome. Studying about wood work to build a rowing shell (single skulling skiff) and got some ideas about cross diagonal stip plank glueing, thought about alternatively to use paper backed veneer (4 layers intotal) to get the around nicely of the hull shape which is very curved. So tks for uploading.
David, thank you so much for your ongoing inspiration! Each video has some awesome techniques and tricks.
Very nice. Magazines are a bit passée these days, but with a little modification, this design could serve as the basis for a quilt rack. The techniques you demonstrated are the same.
Another great episode thanks sharing David 🪵

@@Woodbutcher00 Thank you very much for your comment, I genuinely appreciate it!
I built an end table inspired by this project a good 20 years ago. Didn't have a vacuum press, but miraculously the "add a bunch of crap on top" method of veneering has held up very well!
One of my favorites👍
